MAYWEATHER VS. PACQUIAO

On May 2nd, 2015, The Fight of the Century was located at MGM Hotel Las Vegas, Nevada. The battle for Greatness between the eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated five division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Thanks to social media such as Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram we are aware of the people’s opinions and thoughts. People use it to show their emotions, views, and opinions on various sports. The Fight of the Century made Twitter go crazy after the fight but not only in that moment, but days after the fight as well.

Mayweather was accused of ducking the fight for over six years because of the money that was being offered to him wasn’t enough. However, Pacquiao told him to fight for the fans and not for the money. After Saturday’s fight, Twitter showed us how both of these two fighters live life differently. In the following tweets people show Pacquiao spending time with his family while Mayweather is all about the money and materials.

After it had been announced that Mayweather was the welterweight champion, people started to tweet that this was a boring fight, how the fight was stolen from Pacquiao, and what a waste of time and money it was. Because some people thought that Pacquiao won the fight, some disagreed with how the judges scored and immediately started tweeting their anger against them.

People believed you shouldn’t celebrate a win of someone who is scared of fighting better boxers than him, someone who has committed domestic violence, but also someone who just does the sport for the money and not for the love of the sport.

Thinking that Pacquiao was robbed of the fight, people kept on tweeting, retweeting, and commenting on the memes that people were posting about Mayweather. Many people said, “All he did was give free hugs to Pacquiao and run throughout the 12 rounds.” The memes show how people saw the fight and what they thought about Mayweather as a fighter, that he is someone would rather “run” and “hug” his opponent while maintaining the perception of someone who acts “hard.”

Twitter has become an important social media tool to talk about problems around the world and what’s popular. It is my second time using Twitter and in my opinion is the best social media to find about the latest issues. It’s pretty interesting to have because you are able to see other people’s thoughts about the popular topics. Twitter has become in use and this is the reason why is easier and faster to know about the issues around us.
